How to remove an Email Account from Outlook Express

Use this article to help you remove an e-mail account from Outlook Express versions 5 or 6.

Important:  While you can remove an e-mail account from Outlook Express without actually deleting any e-mail, it is recommended that you back up your e-mail and address book information before doing so.

Find and copy your Email Storage Location
  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. Click Tools, and then click Options.
  3. On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
  4. In the Store Location dialog box, copy the store location. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Put the mouse pointer at one end of the box under the Your personal message store is located in the following folder box.
    2. Press and hold the left mouse button, and then drag the mouse pointer across the Your personal message store is located in the following folder box.
    3. Press CTRL+C to copy the location.
  5. Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.
  6. Click Start, click Run, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.  This will open your Store Location.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Select All to copy all of the files.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.



Create a backup folder
  1. Right-click any empty area on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.
  2. Type Mail Backup for the folder name, and then press ENTER.
  3. Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.
  4. Right-click inside the Mail Backup folder window, and then click Paste to copy over your e-mail Store folder contents.


Follow these steps to export a backup of your Address:
  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. Click on File menu, click Export, and click Address Book.
  3. Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
  4. Click Browse.
  5. Select a folder to save your Address Book to, you can use the Mail Backup folder you created if you like.
  6. In the File Name box, type address book backup, and then click Save.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.
  9. Click OK, and then click Close.


Remove your E-mail Account
  1. Click on Tools on the main Outlook Express window toolbar.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Make sure you are under the Mail tab.
  4. Click once to highlight the account you want to remove. 
  5. Click the Remove button on the right side of the window.
  6. Click Close when you are done.
