This article outlines troubleshooting steps to correct Dial-Up Networking Error 630.

630 - The port was disconnected due to hardware failure.
Error 630: The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on.

Error 630, when attempting to dial, is an indication that the modem connected to the computer is not operating correctly.  This can happen for a number of reasons:

  • The modem is physically damaged
  • The modem is not loaded with the correct drivers
  • The modem is being used by another program
  • The modem failed to properly disengage after the last connection attempt
  • A bad init string has been loaded into the modem properties

 

To resolve a 630 error:

Restart your Computer and Modem Turn off your computer and your modem (if it is external). Wait 30 seconds, turn the modem on (if it is external), wait 15 seconds, and turn the computer on.

Attempt to connect.

Verify that Correct Modem is Selected

Make sure correct modem is selected in the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection. For instructions click here.

Initialization Strings

Check for an initialization string that may be preventing your modem from communicating properly. For instructions click here.

Check the Dial Tone

This error can occur if you have a phone service that utilizes distinctive dial tones. Some services answer incoming calls and automatically take messages for the customer. When a message is received, the service informs you of a stored message by beeping the dial tone when picking up the line. Once the beeping has stopped, you can dial out normally. The modem detects this as no dial tone or a failed response.

If you have such a service, try these steps:

  • Clear Messages or dial service (this will restore the dial tone)
  • Uncheck Wait for Dial Tone and add multiple commas (,,,) to the beginning of the phone number.

Run the Modem Diagnostics Tool

Reinstall the Modem using the manufacturer's drivers

This step is best resolved by contacting the modem's manufacturer or, if it came with the computer, the computer manufacturer.  

Warning:  Removing a modem without having the correct drivers available to reinstall the modem will result in the modem failing to load when rebooting the computer.
