Frequently Asked Questions about DialupTaxes and Fees
  • Article ID: 33076

What do I need to know about taxes and fees on my EarthLink Dial-Up service?

How will I be affected by taxes and fees?
While your EarthLink Internet access plan still costs the same amount it always did, your bill now includes additional charges for applicable taxes and/or fees. Because of this, the total you pay to EarthLink every month will now be different.

I thought Internet access was tax-exempt. Isn't it?
Although there is a national moratorium on taxes and fees for Internet access under the Internet Tax Freedom Act ("the Act"), certain states were "grandfathered", meaning that those states which charged taxes and fees prior to the Act were allowed to continue charging them.

How will my new charges appear on my invoice and credit card or bank statement?
The taxes and/or fees will appear as separate line items on your EarthLink email or paper invoice. However your credit card bill or bank account statement will reflect only your total monthly invoice amount-- this total amount will represent your monthly service price plus applicable taxes and fees.

What will my new bill total be?
The exact amount of taxes and/or fees that EarthLink will be collecting is based on the taxing statutes and regulations of your state and local jurisdiction and the type(s) of EarthLink product(s) and service(s) you have.

How do I submit for tax-exemption?

You will need to submit a valid tax exemption certificate from your state via email to:,, or,  or fax 256-382-3932 to the Tax Department.  You may also mail a copy of your exemption certificate to:

Attn:  Tax Department / Exemptions
EarthLink, LLC
7037 Old Madison Pike, Suite 400
Huntsville, AL  35806

Fax:  256-382-3932 – Attn:  Tax/Exemptions
Phone:  256-382-7052

Please include your exact name, account number, and contact information to enable a timely exemption placed on your account.

Your tax-exempt status should be reflected on your next invoice/billing cycle.  If you do not yet have your exemption certificate, you should contact the Department of Revenue in the state in which your business is located to submit a request to resolve documentation or your exempt status.
