Mail for Mac OS X 10.5 - 10.7 First Time Set Up

In Mac OS X 10.5 - 10.7, the Mail application has been redesigned for easier use and set up. This article illustrates how to manually setup your EarthLink e-mail account in Mac OS X 10.5 - 10.7.

Mail for Mac OS X 10.5 - 10.7 First Time Set Up

You will need the server settings for your e-mail address. Go to EarthLink Server Settings to get these settings.


Open Mail from the Dock or Applications folder.


If this is the first e-mail account you're setting up, the "Welcome to Mail" assistant may appear. If so, click Continue. If not, click File and select Add Account.


In the Add Account section:

  • Type in your first and last name in the Full Name field.
  • Type in your e-mail address in the  Email Address field.
  • Type in your password in the Password field.

Click Create.


Click Mail then Preferences.


Select the Accounts icon in the toolbar of the Mail Preferences window that just popped up. Then select your EarthLink e-mail account.


In the Account Information section, complete the sections that are imcomplete:

  • For Account Type, select POP.
  • In the Incoming Mail Server field, type in your Incoming mail server (POP) according to the settings that you looked up in Step 1 (e.g.
  • In the User Name field, type in your EarthLink e-mail address (e.g.
  • In the Password field, type in your password.
  • In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) selection, click the arrow in the drop-down menu and select Edit Server List.



Verify that the server name matches the Outgoing Server address that you looked up in Step 1. If it is not the same, delete the contents in the Server Name field and enter the correct address.


Click the Advanced tab. 

  • Set Authentication to Password
  • Type in your EarthLink e-mail address in the User Name field. 
  • Type in your password in the Password field.


Click OK.


Click the Advanced tab. Make any necessary changes. 


Exit out of the Mail Preferences menu and you're now ready to send and receive e-mails.
