For a list of the top newsgroup error messages, click here. Is there a download quota limit? Yes. In order to make our News service fair to all users, EarthLink does enforce download limits on its Usenet service. The limit is 5GB during the last 30 days. Please note that "Headers" and articles count towards the limit. Unlike other services, we do not set limits based on calendar months. If you were to download 5GB on January 29th, you would be considered over quota until 30 days from then, or February 28th. Users that have not downloaded 5GB are able to interact with the server without any limits, while users that exceed the 5GB quota in their last 30 days of usage are rate-limited, or throttled, to 64 kilobits per second. Note: This does not affect dialup users. How do I check my quota history? Simply visit https://www.news.earthlink.net/ and login on the left hand side. You will need your email address and password. Remember, your email address and password are case sensitive. (Make sure your CAPS LOCK button is off!) What server name should I use? Three servers are available for Newsgroups usage: nntp.earthlink.net, news.west.earthlink.net and news.east.earthlink.net. For best performance, if you live west of the Mississippi River, you should use news.west.earthlink.net. If you live east of the Mississippi River, you should use news.east.earthlink.net. If you are unsure, you should use news.east.earthlink.net . All servers will have the same functionality, capability, list of newsgroups, and articles. All EarthLink members have access to all three servers. We encourage you to select the server that provides the best experience for you. Do I need to log in to the news server? Yes. All connections to the news servers require authentication. You must log in with your entire email address (e.g. johndoe@earthlink.net). Remember, your email address and password are case sensitive. (Make sure your CAPS LOCK button is off!) How many connections may I open to the news server? EarthLink news servers only allow four simultaneous logins from one connection. This means that you can have up to four programs accessing the news server at any given time. How can I request that newsgroups be added? You can post a message to earthlink.support.usenet, or send an email to newssupport@earthlink.net. However, at this time new newsgroups are not being added to the server. How long does EarthLink keep articles on the news servers? The retention goal for binary articles is seven (7) days. The retention goal for text articles is thirty (30) days. Please note that this is only a general guideline, and actual retention may vary. Are there any posting limits? If you are experiencing slow uploads and/or timeouts when trying to post messages to a newsgroup, it is likely that you have exceeded the daily limit on message uploads. What is the maximum size of a post we accept? One megabyte. This is generally considered the standard for most Usenet servers.
