Troubleshooting & Configuration
What are some basic MailStation troubleshooting steps?

1. Check the phone cord connected from the wall jack to the MailStation and the AC Adapter.
2. Remove any splitters being used at the wall jack. The phone cord from the MailStation should be plugged directly into the wall jack.
3. Select Extras, then Settings, and verify that “Ignore dial tone when dialing?” is set to No. (Newer Mailstation devices do not have this option)

NOTE: If you have a voicemail system that creates a "stutter" dial tone, set it to Yes instead.

4. From the same Settings window, verify that the Speaker volume is set to Yes.
5. We recommend setting “Do you have call waiting?” to No, even if you have call waiting.

What should I do if MailStation Mailbox is full?

With access to a computer and an Internet account, you can delete email from the mail server using Web Mail. Go to: http://webmail.earthlink.net and log on using your MailStation email address and password.

NOTE: Selection of a dial-up number may result in incurring toll or long distance charges while sending and retrieving email. You are solely responsible for any and all charges resulting from choosing and/or changing a dial-up number.

Why are my email messages missing or truncated?

There are several reasons why you may receive a message that is blank or truncated. One example would be e-mail sent in HTML format. This is because HTML, a type of computer language that is not compatible with our Mailstation e-mail terminals, cannot be received. If this happens ask the sender to resend the message in a plain text format.

If your e-mail includes an attachment (Picture or link to a web site), it cannot be received unless you are using a Mailstation 350 device which can accept BMP, JPEG, and GIF images smaller than 100Kb in size. If you are using one of the other Mailstation models, messages with attachments can be viewed on the web by accessing your account using a PC at http://webmail.earthlink.net.

Some messages are sent as an attachment. This is generally the case when you receive a message that seems complete but may be cut off. This is normal and there is no reason for concern. If you receive this or a partial message, they can also be viewed by accessing your web account as described above.

What topics (channels) are available and how do I "change" my channel options with my MailStation unit?

EarthLink is no longer able to make changes to the Channel listings in MailStation devices.

How can I remove the dark spots that are appearing on my screen?

Move the MailStation unit away from extreme environmental conditions and/or remove any objects that may be on the screen to allow the screen to stabilize.

I keep getting the "Mailbox is Getting Full" Warning. How do I delete my messages?

Once your mailbox at the Internet Server is 75% full, you will begin receiving an auto message warning that your "mailbox is getting full". You will receive this message every day until your mailbox drops below 75%. Clearing memory at the product level will not correct this issue. What typically fills your mailbox are truncated messages (Pictures or long emails) that are automatically saved on our Internet Server.

When your mailbox is clear, you can resume sending and receiving e-mail. You can only delete messages via Web Mail online. To delete messages in your mailbox, use a PC to access http://webmail.earthlink.net and log in with your MailStation e-mail address and password.

If you would like to optimize memory at the product level, we recommend that you delete any unwanted saved e-mails or information in your address book and calendar. If you have a Mivo Original 100 series device, you can also go to EXTRAS, select SETTINGS, then press the gray button below OPTIMIZE. By doing this routinely, your MailStation will maintain a high percentage of memory. This function is automatic with our other Mivo products such as the 150, 250 and 350 models.

What does "Please standby ... performing maintenance." mean?

From time to time, the MailStation device performs internal maintenance of its memory. There is no cause for alarm. The procedure will typically conclude in under one minute.

What does "Please connect the AC adapter and try again." mean?

Your device detected that the AC Adapter was not connected while performing a function that requires AC power. You should connect the AC adapter and try the operation again.

I got the "If you would like to make a call please hang up and try again." error message. What do I do?

Verify that you have the correct number of digits in the Dial-Up Number field. Include all of the digits that are necessary to dial the number from your regular telephone. For example, if it is necessary to dial a 1, 9, or an area code before the number from your regular telephone, it is also necessary to include these numbers as part of the dial-up number in your MailStation.

To change the dial-up number:

  1. From the Main Menu, press the navigation key below Extras.

  2. Press the navigation key under Settings.

  3. Use the down arrow or Tab key to move the cursor to the Dial-Up No. field.

  4. In the Dial-Up No. field, type the access number. If you live an area that requires10 digit dialing, include the area code. If you need to dial a 9 for an outside line, enter 9, before the number.

  5. Press the navigation key below Save to save the changes to the Dial-Up No.

Note: Selection of a dial-up number may result in incurring toll or long distance charges while sending and retrieving email. You are solely responsible for any and all charges resulting from choosing and/or changing a dial-up number. Please check with your phone company to make sure the dial-up number is a local call.

I received a message from Mailer Daemon@earthlink.net saying that my message couldn't be delivered.

A message being returned is usually an indication that there is an issue with the e-mail address you are trying to send a message to. Most Mailer Daemon returns are caused by a simple typographical error. Check the e-mail address for any typos. Failure can also be caused by a routing problem, server issue, or a block. If you read the failure notice, it will tell you why your message was returned.
