Configuration for Bridge Mode |
When would you use Bridge Mode on your modem? In order to successfully use a wireless router, you must change your DSL modem to Bridge mode. Bridge mode basically means that you're not using your DSL modem to connect to EarthLink's network and you're instead using your wireless router. The term "Bridge" is used because you're bridging your connection over, or around, your modem and connecting using your wireless router instead.
Follow these simple steps to change your modem to Bridge Mode.
Type the modem's IP address in your internet browser's address bar and hit the Enter key. The default IP is 192.168.1.1.

You should receive a login prompt. If this is your first time logging into the ZyXEL, the default password should be 1234.
Note: If the login screen doesn't appear, make sure the ethernet cable from your computer to the router is in place. If the ethernet cable is connected properly, restart your computer. If you still can't get to the password screen after you restart, see Configure Windows for DHCP to set up your network control panel to use DHCP and then try again. If all else fails, reset the router by holding down the Reset button on the back of the device for 10 seconds and then attempt to access the router again.

If you logged in with the default password of 1234, the ZyXEL will prompt you to change this password. It is recommended that you change this password for security purposes. Type the new password twice in the fields provided and hit Apply.

The ZyXEL main menu should appear. You will click the Wizard Setup link.

Make sure settings on the next page titled Wizard Setup - ISP Parameters for Internet Access match those below and then click Next.
-
- Mode: Bridge
- Encapsulation: RFC 1483
- Multiplex: LLC
- Virtual Circuit ID: VPI: 0 VCI: 35

- The next screen will show an overview of the settings you have chosen. Click Next.

At this point, it will be necessary to connect your Home Networking router to the ZyXEL's Ethernet port. With the ZyXEL in Bridge mode, you must have another device in place that is configured for PPPoE authentication. See Connecting your computer to a router for help connecting your devices properly.
