Summary
Linksys WRTP54G - How to Configure the Linksys WRTP54G for WEP Encryption
The WRTP54G wireless router allows both older WEP encryption as well as newer WPA encryption. EarthLink recommends using WPA. But, remember that every wireless device on your network must support WPA in order to use it. Many older wireless adapters for desktops and laptops only support WEP, so you may have to use this method. If all equipment on your network supports WPA, we strongly recommend you follow the instructions on KB article 158415 instead of using this article. For more detailed general information on wireless encryption, see KB article 25629 .

Prerequisites/Requirements
All wireless devices on the network must support WEP encryption.
Procedure
- Type the router's IP address in your browser address bar and hit the Enter key. The default IP is 192.168.15.1.

- You will receive a login prompt. Type in the current password for the router. If it is still in default configuration, you will type "admin" for both the Username and Password to gain entry.
Note: If the password screen doesn't appear after you click enter, make sure the ethernet cable from your computer to the router is in place. See KB article 145044if you need help connecting the devices properly. If the ethernet cable is connected properly, restart your computer. If you still can't get to the password screen after you restart, see KB article4725 to set up your network control panel to use DHCP and then try again.

Note: You should change the default password for your router for greater security if you have not already. See KB article 158697 for instructions on changing the password.
- Click on the Wireless tab across the top menu, and choose the Wireless Security tab that appears underneath it.

- Choose WEP under the Security Mode drop down menu:

- In the fields that appear, fill out this information:
- Default Transmit Key: Leave this set at one (1).
- WEP encryption: You may choose either 64 or 128 bit. 128 bit encryption is more secure.
- Passphrase: You may enter a phrase of your choosing with up to 16 digits and no spaces. This word or phrase will be used to generate a 64 or 128 bit encryption key, depending on which you chose. Remember this phrase, as you will need it to configure Linksys wireless adapters on your network. If the wireless adapters connected to other computers in your home are not made by Linksys, you should also record the 10 or 26 digit code generated in the "Key 1" field for use with these adapters.
- Key 1-4 - You may create your own 10 digit (64 bit) or 26 digit (128 bit) encryption key by typing it here. You may use numbers 0 through 9 and letters A through F. This field is not case sensitive. The key should be random in nature. Only one key will be in use on your network at one time; this is specified under Default Transmit Key.

- Hit the Save Settings button. Your router is now configured for WEP encryption. You should now configure each wireless adapter on your network with the same settings.
