Configuring WEP Encryption on the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
  • Article ID: 32391
  • Last modified date: August 20, 2010 24:08
Summary
Encryption Methods

The WRT54G wireless router allows both older WEP encryption as well as newer WPA and WPA2 encryption. EarthLink recommends using WPA2, but remember that every wireless device on your network must support at least the first version of WPA in order to use it. Many older wireless adapters for desktops and laptops only support WEP, so you may have to use this method. If all equipment on your network supports WPA or WPA2, we strongly recommend you follow the instructions on KB article 25695 instead of using this article. For more detailed general information on wireless encryption, see KB article 25629.

Configuring WEP Encryption on the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
  1. Type the router's IP address in your browser address bar. The default IP is 192.168.1.1.

  2. You will receive a login prompt. Type in the current password for the router. If it is still in default configuration, you will leave the User Name field blank and type "admin" in the Password field to gain entry.

Note: If the password screen doesn't appear after you click enter, make sure the ethernet cable from your computer to the router is in place. See KB article 3901 if you need help connecting the devices properly. If the ethernet cable is connected properly, restart your computer. If you still can't get to the password screen after you restart, see KB article 4725 to set up your network control panel to use DHCP and then try again.

Note: You should change the default password for your router for greater security if you have not already. See KB article 8308 for instructions on changing the password.

  3. Click on the Wireless tab across the top menu, and choose the Wireless Security tab that appears underneath it.

  4. Choose WEP under the Security Mode drop down menu:

  5. In the fields that appear, fill out this information:
    • Default Transmit Key: Leave this set at one (1).
    • WEP encryption: You may choose either 64 or 128 bit. 128 bit encryption is more secure.
    • Passphrase: You may enter a phrase of your choosing with up to 16 digits and no spaces. This word or phrase will be used to generate a 64 or 128 bit encryption key, depending on which you chose. Remember this phrase, as you will need it to configure Linksys wireless adapters on your network. If the wireless adapters connected to other computers in your home are not made by Linksys, you should also record the 10 or 26 digit code generated in the "Key 1" field for use with these adapters.
    • Key 1-4 - You may create your own 10 digit (64 bit) or 26 digit (128 bit) encryption key by typing it here. You may use numbers 0 through 9 and letters A through F. This is field is not case sensitive. The key should be random in nature. Only one key will be in use on your network at one time; this is specified under Default Transmit Key.

  6. Hit the Save Settings button. Your router is now configured for WEP encryption. You should now configure each wireless adapter on your network with the same settings.
