Summary

Follow the steps below to initially configure the phonebook in Dial-Up Networking.

How to configure Dial-Up Networking to connect to EarthLink
1

Double-click the My Computer icon.

2

Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.

3

Click the OK button.

4

In the Name the new phonebook entry box, type  EarthLink .

5

Check the box next to I know all about phonebook entries and would rather edit the properties directly.

6

Click the Finish button.

7

Uncheck the box next to Use Telephony dialing properties.

8

In the Phone number box, type your local EarthLink access number. An access number can be found on our Access Number Search page.

Note:

    • Remember to check with your local telephone company to make sure that the access number you choose is a local toll-free call.
    • When you enter the access number, type it exactly as you would dial it from your home phone.
    • Do not include a 1 or the area code unless you have to dial it to make a local call from your home telephone.
    • If you are dialing from a hotel, office, or other phone system that requires you to dial a digit such as 9 to get an outside line, insert that number before the access number.
    • To disable call waiting while using the internet, insert the call waiting defeat code (usually *70) before the access number. Note: only insert this code if you have call waiting on the line you will connect with. Check with your phone company to determine which code to use for your line.
    • Ignore the Area Code field. All numbers, including 9, 1, area code, or *70 should be entered in the Telephone Number field.

9

Uncheck the box next to Use another port if busy.

10

Click on the Server tab.

11

Uncheck the box next to Enable PPP LCP extensions.

12

Check the box next to TCP/IP.

13

Click on the Security tab.

14

Click the Accept any authentication including clear text radio button in the Authentication and encryption policy area.

15

Click the OK button.

16

Click the Dial button.

17

In the Username field, type your entire email address (e.g., johndoe@earthlink.net).

18

In the Password field, type your password.

19

20

Check the box next to Save Password if you wish to save your password.

21
